2026
The sixth Gold Creek Simmentals bull sale exceeded all expectations with 39/39 sold, averaging $12, 197 and a top price of $30 ,000 – Lot 4, Gold Creek Nebraska – sold to Simon and Louise McRae from Overland Simmentals at Waimate. This was the stud’s highest achievement to date, for both top price and average.
Strong bidding and support from both stud and commercial bidders resulted in other top prices of $25, 000 (Lot 2, Gold Creek Nobleman, to Aaron Gubb from Beefit Simmental) and $20, 000 (Lot 22, Gold Creek Nero, to Mangaoh). There were four stud transfers.
For the first time, Black Simmentals entered the sale ring with 7/7 sold at an average of $12, 214. “We were thrilled with the turnout and support from commercial and stud buyers alike, with strong interest across the entire offering, particularly the Black Simmental bulls”.
2025
The fifth Gold Creek Simmentals bull sale was an incredible day with a deep and consisent offering of bulls providing high-quality genetics that continue to meet the needs of both commercial and stud farmers.
A full clearance of 29/29 resulted in an average of $11, 675 and a top price of $26, 000 – Lot 12, Gold Creek Meat Machine – sold to Aaron Gubb from Beefit Ltd Simmental Stud in Northland. A stud record for both average and top price. Other top prices included $21, 000 (Lot 2, Gold Creek Megatron, to Jon Knauff from Kerrah Simmentals) and $19, 000 (Lot 3, Gold Creek Monumental, to commercial). Five bulls made their way home to studs across the country – a real testament to our breeding programme and loyal following.
This year, over 50% of the bulls catalogued were Homozygous Polled, adding another layer of certainty for our clients looking to reduce dehorning and improve animal welfare outcomes.
2024
The fourth on-farm Gold Creek Simmentals bull sale resulted in 24/25 bulls sold. During a year where budgets were still tight for farmers after a year of increasing farm expenses, the sale resulted in a healthy average of $7, 326 and a top price of $17, 000 – Lot 6, Gold Creek Locomotive – sold to Glenside Simmentals in Otago.
The other bulls pulling in some impressive prices for the year were Lot 2 – Gold Creek Love Muscle – sold for $12, 500, and Lot 8 – Gold Creek Lomu – sold for $11, 000. Both sold to repeat commercial clients who continue to support our breeding programme.
The line-up of bulls this year also reflected our methodical progression towards a fully polled herd, with only one horned bull and in excess of 25% of the bulls being homozygous polled. Alongside this breeding goal, a number of bulls catalogued were out of first-calving heifers – reflecting our key focus on fertility. All heifers are successfully calved as 2-year olds and they MUST have a calf every year to remain in the herd.
2023
Although the rain tried to call the shots, the third on-farm Gold Creek Simmentals bull sale went off without a hitch with 29/31 bulls sold at an average of $7, 729. Top price for the day went to Hannah and Jeremy Bright from Wairoa for Lot 2 – Gold Creek Kodiak – for $13, 500. Kodiak is sired by Woonallee Phar Lap and out of donor cow Te Raumauku A22, who now has 21 progeny, including a whopping eight sale bulls!
Although the land remains battered and bruised from Cyclone Gabrielle, 2023 was a spectacular line-up of bulls encompassing the Gold Creek Simmentals breeding objectives of high growth, fertility, structure and docility.
2022
With more than 150 people in attendance, the second annual Gold Creek Simmentals on-farm bull sale went off without a hitch last month, achieving full clearance and great results overall.
29 of 29 bulls sold for an average price of $9,111, a pleasing increase from last year’s average of $6,700. The pick of the line-up, Lot 1, went for a top price of $20,000, while Lots 2 and 10 each achieved $18,000.
An impressive total of seven stud transfers were made, and overall there was a good number of new buyers in the mix, including both stud and commercial operators.
Tom said the team was extremely proud of this year’s catalogue.
“We knew this year’s lineup was undoubtedly the best yet for Gold Creek, so it was great to see that recognised by the buyers on the day.
“Consistency of type shone right throughout this year’s catalogue and, as always, structure and docility were at the forefront of breeding decisions and a big part of selection criteria for sale bulls. We had a large number of ET bulls on offer this year, which is something we have been investing heavily in over the last few years.”
“Ultimately, we breed cattle to help enhance your bottom line, and everything we do to further our herd has that goal at the forefront.”
2021
A good crowd braved terrible weather to give strong support to the 2021 GC sale, where two New Zealand Simmental records were broken at Matawai.
The sale raised the highest price for a rising one-year bull and highest price for a semen straw, while four bulls and two heifers were transferred for stud. The infusion of Woonallee genetics was seen as a point of difference and viewed as an outcross for many studs.
Gold Creek Simmentals is a proud, family-owned and operated bull-breeding business, continually pushing to produce top-quality sires. Every year the business flushes its best cows and introduces a range of genetics to continually lift the quality of calves produced.
The three generations of family to run Gold Creek Simmentals have found a near-perfect place for the breed, and this year’s draft of bulls were powerful terminal sires with high growth rates.
All bulls have 100k SNP profiles, have been sire verified, and have been service capacity tested and semen tested so buyers can be confident they are ready to go at mating time.
The make-up of these pedigrees comprised an outcross for many herds, with genetics sourced from both New Zealand and overseas, producing a result that is performing well in the New Zealand climate and market.
One of the sires that features heavily is Woonallee Los Angeles, still the record-priced Simmental bull in Australasia. He has been the best performing imported sire we have used to date and is stamping his progeny with real substance and style.
2021 Gold Creek Simmentals on-farm sale results:
2020
Due to the COVID-19 Alert Level 4 lock down, Gold Creek’s planned inaugural on-farm auction was unable to go ahead last month, however, the quality of the bulls in this year’s catalogue spoke for themselves, thus securing a successful result for the Simmental Stud via Private Treaty sales.
21 of a catalogued 23 bulls sold, for an average of $7285 – an improvement on last year in both figures. In 2019, Stud owner, Tom Sanson, sold 16 of 28 bulls for an average of $6850. He believes the result is testament to his passionate commitment to continually improving his breeding programme.
Two bulls were purchased by other Simmental Studs – Lot 1: Gold Creek Gladiator sold to Opawa Downs for $18,000 – the highest equal price paid for a Simmental bull in New Zealand this season. Lot 2: Gold Creek G-Force sold to Potawa Simmentals for $16,000. Further to this, semen was purchased by Woonallee Simmentals in Australia.
Tom says it was pleasing to do repeat business from a number of loyal clients, as well as get new buyers on record.
“Overall I think we had a solid line-up of quality bulls this year, with results trending in the right direction.”

All this combined with rigours structural assessment mean bulls will have the greatest chance to perform at their new home without breakdown. Should the worst happen and there is an injury they are guaranteed for two years, and offer complete assistance by way of back up sire to loyal clients.
