FRASER TOMBLESON: Aerial Station

LOCATION: East of Matawai, Gisborne, East Coast

SIZE: 1000 hectares

TERRAIN: Steep Hill Country

Second generation farm, first purchased in 1973.
Fraser leases the majority from his father as well as owning part of it.
Challenging terrain – 1000 metres above sea level at the top and 300 metres above sea level at the bottom.
Sheep and beef farm running 3300 ewes, 150 in calf cows plus a mixture of steers and bulls.
Majority of the bulls are sent to slaughter at 18-months-old, replacement heifers retained and cull heifers sent to slaughter at 2.5 years.

INVOLVEMENT WITH
THE GOLD CREEK

Simmental bulls have been used on Aerial station since 2013 – always Gold Creek.
Fraser has been dealing with Tom for the five years he has been running the farm.
Though Fraser’s cattle are a bit of a mixture, they are predominantly Simmental these days.
Cows are calved amongst the sheep with minimal intervention.

SIMMENTAL IMPACT

Gold Creek deliver solid, meaty bulls every season.
Despite the very challenging terrain Fraser’s cows always scan really well – typically between 90-100 percent success rate.
Exceptional growth rates in progeny – on average weans at 230-250kg and sends to slaughter at 550kg plus (18 months).
Gold Creek bulls have a sound temperament which makes for very pleasant handling.
